Terminology

What is a wireless bridge?

In simple terms a wireless bridge is a device that allows two or more complete networks of users to transparently communicate to one another over long distances without wires. These networks can be in the same building but are normally in either adjacent buildings or with the proper antennas and can even connect networks up to 30 miles apart. Wireless bridges connect to the wired network through the Ethernet port and replicate that data to a remote network bridge or access point via 802.11a/b/g/n wireless (Wi-Fi) protocol. Here is a full explanation.

What is a WiFi Access Point?

A wi-fi access point is a radio frequency device that lets you share a network of computers wirelessly around a home, hotel, school or office. Wi-Fi is a generic terms for the IEEEE standards 802.11b/g, 802.11a and 802.11n. These access points most commonly use the 2.4Ghz & 5GHz band because they are unlicensed and do not require authorization from the FCC. There are also many outdoor wireless access points that allow you to share your network outdoors.

What is a Wifi Spectrum Analyzer and when do I need one?

Since wifi is used in the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz unlicensed frequency bands anyone can install an access point without regulation and because of this hundreds of thousands of access-points have been installed around the world. All of these APs are not contending for the same limited amount of RF frequency and therefore start interfering with one another. To make sure that you are getting the best performance from your network you need to find the least congested channel and to do this you need a Wifi Spectrum Analyzer. The Wi-Fi spectrum analyzer sniffs the air around you and graphical represents the adjacent RF interference sources allowing for better planning and more accurate wireless network design. Here are some from MetaGeek.

What is an IP Camera?

An IP Camera is video camera that transmits a video stream digitally using IP (Internet Protocol) to a recording device or NVR (Network Video Recorder). IP cameras are more sophisticated than traditional analog CCTV cameras and allow for remote management, detailed color correction, remote viewing over the internet.

What is an NVR or Network Video Recorder?

IP Camera streams are sent to an NVR to be recorded and archived for evidence. A network video recorder can be created from standard computer hardware and network video recorder software or some manufacturers sell NVR appliances.
