The E-rate program was designed to help expand Wi-Fi to more than 10 million students in 2015 alone. Federal funding is available to you to accelerate this initiative which may be used towards network hardware, software, and licensing needed to provide Internet access to district and student- owned devices. Category 2 ERate specifically calls out wireless access points, wireless controllers, network switching, software, and cabling needed to support the new WiFi initiative.

Getting Started on Erate
The E-rate program provides discounts to assist your schools to obtain affordable telecommunications and Internet access to help you meet Common Core criteria. We’ve provided you with useful instructions, links to forms, tools and tricks to help you through your E-rate process.
Register in E-rate Productivity Center (EPC) then file the Form 470: Description of Services Requested and Certification
Once filed, applicants may start soliciting bids.
After Filing Form 470, schools must wait 28 days before reviewing bids.
Price must be the primary factor, but schools may also take into account other factors including equipment needs and personnel qualifications.
File Form 471: Services Ordered and Certification
After schools select their service provider and vendors, they must have signed contracts before submitting Form 471.
File Form 486: Receipt of Service Confirmation
USAC will issue a Funding Commitment Decision Letter (FCDL) once applications are reviewed and approved.
Once received, Form 486 must be submitted, which authorizes the payment of invoices from services providers.
